The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark column of gas and dust standing out against the bright reddish emission of the nebula IC 434 in the constellation of Orion. Below, the Flame Nebula blazes with light energized by the nearby star Alnitak. This photo, showing the emission of hydrogen and doubly ionized oxygen, is the result of 40 180-second exposures using dedicated software, a digital astronomical camera, a dual-band H-alpha/OIII filter, and a telescope mounted on an equatorial mount.
