The Andromeda Galaxy (also known as Messier 31 or M31) is the largest galaxy in the Local Group and is visible in the constellation of Andromeda, about 2.5 million light-years from Earth. In this image, the bright central core, the faint spiral arms, and the dust lanes crossing the galactic disk can be distinguished.
