Leserbilder Astronomie: The California Nebula (NGC 1499)

It is an emission nebula visible in the constellation Perseus. Its name derives from its similarity in shape to the US state of California. It is about 1000 light-years from Earth. It is shown here in a starless version to better appreciate the details of the shapes of what appear to be H-alpha-clouds.
