This image shows the Moon and Mongialino Castle. The castle was built in the late Middle Ages and is unique in Sicily for its four-story toroidal keep. Its feudal history saw the succession of several noble families, from the Paternòs to the de Lucis to the Chiaramontes. Historical sources from the 16th and 18th centuries testify that the structure was still largely intact at that time. Modern excavations have revealed that the hill was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, long before the castle was built. The complex includes a defensive wall and an impressive cistern for collecting rainwater inside the tower. The image is a composite of two shots of the same scene with different exposures.
