On the evening of July 30, 2026, the tremors from Mount Etna were growing increasingly intense, and, anticipating an imminent eruption, I set out from my hometown of Ragusa (150 km south of the volcano) along with other photography enthusiasts to capture any eruptive activity. Upon arriving at our usual shooting spot at about 1,500 meters above sea level on the volcano’s eastern slope, violent activity began, with the emission of ash, lapilli, and even a lava flow. I began filming to capture a star trail over the erupting volcano and to record the tracks of the dozens of hikers and guides who rushed to climb the volcano to reach an optimal vantage point for observing this natural spectacle up close—but always in complete safety. The full moon illuminated the landscape during the shoot.
