Leserbilder Astronomie: The (almost) full Moon and the Minaret
We are on the coast of the Porto Grande in Syracuse, and this evening's image is the second full moon of the month of May, the so-called Blue Moon. Don't worry, if you see it pink, it's not the wrong color. The expression Blue Moon comes from the English and is used to indicate the second full moon to occur within the same calendar month. It's a rather rare phenomenon, so much so that it even gave rise to the English expression "once in a blue moon." Not only that, it's also a moon that appears smaller than usual due to its position at apogee (essentially, at the point in its orbit farthest from Earth). The truth is that the 100% full moon will be tomorrow, but this one deserved to be photographed just for the wonderful Belt of Venus in which it is immersed.
