Leserbilder Astronomie: Messier 8, Lagoon Nebula
Messier 8, also known as the Lagoon Nebula, is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius discovered by Giovanni Hodierna before 1654 from the Kingdom of Sicily. With an apparent extension of 3 x 1.25 times the diameter of the full moon, is one of the finest and brightest stellar nursery regions in the sky about 5200 light-years distant, in the direction of the center of our Milky-Way-Galaxy.
One of the remarkable features of the nebula is the presence of dark clouds known as Bok globules, collapsing clouds in process of forming new stars. Likewise it contains the open cluster NGC 6530, a group of bright stars recently born. In the bottom right of the image the IC 4678 nebula can be seen, a cloud which reflects the bluish brightness of a nearby star.
